Sheetz is a family owned convenience store chain based in Altoona, Pennsylvania. For more than 50 years, our mission at Sheetz has been to meet the needs of customers on the go. Of course, things have changed over those 50+ years. Life is faster and busier, and customers expect us to be there when they need us most. One thing that hasn't changed over the years is our commitment to our customers, our employees and the communities in which we operate. Bob Sheetz founded Sheetz, Inc. in 1952 when he purchased one of his father's five dairy stores located in Altoona, Pennsylvania. In 1961, Bob hired his brother Steve to work part-time at the store. It was not until 1963 that the second store was opened under the name "Sheetz Kwik Shopper." It took another five years to open the third store. In 1969, Steve joined Bob in the business as general manager. The brothers planned to expand at the rate of one store per year with a target of seven stores by 1972. In 1972, the brothers literally doubled the size of the company expanding from seven to fourteen stores. One year later, Sheetz added gasoline pumps and introduced self-serve gasoline to Central Pennsylvania. By 1983, Bob and Steve had opened 100 stores. The following year, Bob retired and handed over the leadership of the company to his trusted business partner and brother Steve. In 1995, Stan Sheetz, Bob's son, became president and Steve assumed the position of Chairman of the Board. To this day, Sheetz maintains a unique and successful family business with five family members serving on the Executive Committee. Since 1952, Sheetz has grown from a small dairy/deli in Altoona, PA, to one of the fastest growing, family-owned convenience stores in the world, with more than 360 locations across six states — Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio and North Carolina — and more than 13,000 employees. | ![]()

I graduated from PSU in 94 with a BS in Business Logistics. At that time, Logistics companies were hiring entry-level grads for $24K a year. They really wanted field level experience, and I had none yet. Also, that would require a move to a metro area, which meant significantly more $$$! I had a friend managing old #10 who was always telling me how much money Sheetz was offering and how great the company was. So, needing some experience, and knowing that I could live at home while I was getting started, I interviewed with then Regional Manager, Dan McMahon... (Now Executive Vice President of Operations.) Once I met with Dan and saw "behind-the-curtain," I was in! Sheetz had a swagger and a confidence I had never seen before... Dan hired me as an Unassigned Manager Trainee. I completed my training in Mount Union, #40, and immediately bid on a new store opening in Bloomsburg #213. I relocated 4 times for Dave Woodley. Each time I accepted higher volume, and more challenging store. After proving my worth, I was promoted to General Manager and eventually District Manager. After 2 more relocations, and a total of 10 years in Operations, I was given the opportunity to interview for the position managing our Food Service Sales due in part to my proven track record of success I think, and partly because of the great relationships I had built with the key leaders in the organization. Two years after my move to Marketing, I was made a Director, and now reside over our entire Made To Order and Sheetz Brothers Kitchen Food Service Operation. I would sum it up by saying that I was originally enticed in by the great salary and benefits Sheetz offered, compared to my other choices at the time. But, I stayed because of the great people and the wealth of opportunity I was given. At every level, I was offered challenges and given the chance and the tools to shine. If you are hardworking and get results, there really isn't a limit to what you can achieve here. I am hopeful for even bigger opportunities in the future! | ![]()
